When should you bring your child in for his or her first visit? This is a question that parents ask frequently. You will hear many different opinions. Some will say to bring your child in as soon as they get their first tooth, although, this may not be necessary for everyone. We would like to see children at least by age three, although you can bring them in earlier if you have any concerns about their oral health. By this time they should have all of their baby teeth. This visit allows us to check for any cavities that may be starting or catch any developmental problems early. It also allows your child to get used to being at the dentist. At these early visits (ages 3-6), our goal is to make sure the child feels comfortable and not threatened. We focus on educating the parents on how to take care of the child’s teeth. If the child is willing, we perform a visual exam to look for any cavities. Most often we will not take x-rays until the child is older and able to tolerate them.
